Hi Kavi,

Yes, you can use those in dialogue, but often it’s not a good idea because they just sound like cliches from your character. I recommend that writers come up with a variation on an idiom or proverb… add their twist on it to make it more creative and interesting.

For example, I sometimes mix metaphors like… “How do you eat an elephant?” The usual answer is: “One bite at a time.” But I would add a little twist and say, “You get up in the morning and have a little with coffee, every day.” On the answer part, that’s where you can bring in something relevant to your character’s situation… to make it more interesting.

A movie should have macro construction of course, but each scene should have it’s own piece of construction as well and this is the best way to pop the dialog. Drop the right element or idea into a scene. Look around and use something in the room. Or think of the right element and move the scene to another location. For instance, it my script, in one particular scene, I moved the scene to the Palace “Game Room” and I have the Princess knife throwing at her Father strapped into a Wheel of Death. Suddenly the scene became very funny. Physical action is always the best and should deliver a punch-line. If you drop the right element into a scene, it writes itself.
