Hi Richard,

So sorry…. I’m using a new technology and am discovering there may be a little problem. Are you by chance using an Ipad? Or what device. You should see the regular little arrow to click in the lower left corner. Let me know… I’d like to make sure this thing works!

Hi Patrick,

With what you describe, you would still fall into the ‘Beyond Newbie” category. The distinction between Beyond Newbie and On the Verge of Professional is that for “On the Verge,” you would need to have actually been paid for your work — real pay and also have a number of industry contacts who know and like your work.

The article is really meant to address who to go to next, so in your case, my suggestion would be to target producers first — and then add managers if you like. But producers first.

As an additional note, contests each have their own personality and criteria. They are not all created equal. So the fact that you haven’t won or at least placed in the Top 10% may or may not suggest that your scripts need more work.

Before you do any more marketing, you might consider having me do a script review (http://smartg.com/script-coverage/) — there are a few different types I offer. And I can tell you whether the fundamentals are there.

One of my philosophies is that you’re never going to write a script that everyone loves, but if we can remove obstacles or fix things to expand the audience as far as possible, then that’s what we want to go for.

Let me know if this longer answers your concern about what category you fit in. If not, feel free to email me at support (at) smartg.com — or the email in the footer.

Cheers.

I have a number of scripts ranging from a western, sci-fi, horror, family/animation and also a couple of short scripts which have mixed success – some contests and reviewers have loved them, others have hated them. One script made the finals of Storypros and Final Draft a couple of years back but can’t even crack the quarters in the Page or BlueCat. I feel there are a number of writers who have a number of scripts that have had some recognition from contests etc but because they never win a contest, they seem to never get a foot in the door.
