It would be nice, and you could be right. There certainly have been major partings-of-the-way when an actor learns that an agent passed on a great script or offer without discussing it.

However, it is hard for most poeple to comprehend how many people — writers, friends, media, producers, fans, studio execs and so on — are trying to connect with these star actors. They have to have a big team of people to help manage their business, which includes reading scripts. Everyone knows that most scripts are somewhere between no good and okay… These star actors want the great scripts. How do they find the needle in the haystack? They have people looking for them…. agents, managers, assistants, producers, and such.

You have to get their ear a different way and convince them that yours is worth reading! But they must have a team to do some of the “vetting” of screenplays.

You can go through their agent or manager with an idea, but some of these people “pass” without a looksee going to their client OR they ask “how much?” And really, you just needed the actor to see it, read it, and champion it as a project they want to do. Too much decision-making is left up to their “handlers”.

I guess that’s what literary agents are for… but most of us don’t have these sales people working for us.

Hi V.,
Thanks for your question… Writers often ask me this. As you can see, you definitely will hear different things from different people. In fact, if you drill it all the way down, the fact is that to sell a script at all is a long-shot, and therefore if you’re playing the odds, the odds are way against you, and there are no guarantees that something will happen with your script, even if you KNOW SPIELBERG!

Keeping in mind that it’s a long shot no matter what, I look at it like THEN your job is to start improving your odds any way you can. First write a great script for example. Then create a strong pitch. Then you have to get it out to the right people.

With our query letter mailings, we improve your odds as much as possible by first writing the best pitch of your story. Next by selecting the right targets for your genre — and also selecting as many companies as possible who WILL look at query letters. And finally, we like to choose at least 100 targeted companies because there’s also the “Numbers Game” factor. After that, we give you materials to tell you how to do follow up calls to the targeted companies.

So… every single thing you do to market a script is a long shot. So you either decide to go ahead and do it anyway OR you decide to NEVER market your script OR you make your script as good and as commercial as you can, and then you try various things over time, and build your contact list. Another reason we offer various ways to help you get your script out there.

With that said, we do not guarantee specific results, but we have had many clients make contacts, get their scripts read, and even get hired for writing assignments as a result of their first contact being through query letters or email query blasting.

Let us know if we can help.
