It really gives substance and clarity to the rationale for including practically any scene (or sequence, for that matter) in a screenplay. I’ve always told students and clients that every scene must support the storyline, keep momentum going with conflict or rising tension toward a crescendo, or develop key characters in some substantial way. But your article homes in with laser precision on those essential tasks and, importantly, also wakens us to the oft-overlooked underlying theme of the story–that cosmic glue necessary to give the story its purpose and impart its life lesson.
