I’m glad to hear that, Arno. Reminders are good…. helps sink things in deeper and deeper. Happy writing.

Patrick, when developing a script, there’s always the time for the right brain work and the left brain work. I think Truby is even more cerebral than Campbell and Vogler, but I think it’s still great.

When I review a script, the first time, I’m reading with my heart and not “thinking” (hopefully the writing helps me do that). Then after I read the script, I see what feeling I’m left with. It could be good or bad or annoyed at the level of writing, but I sense it based on feeling and note that.

The second thing I do is to think it through cerebrally. I move into a left brain mode and think about how did they do with plot, theme, and character arc. Then I start to see some weaknesses exposed that I didn’t notice at first.

It’s in the left brain/analytic and developmental process that these more detailed breakdowns are very valuable. They’re not meant to be an absolutely blueprint, but to actually give guiding distinctions to help with your developmental process.

I wanted to share my take on it with you since I know you work pretty hard on your scripts! Maybe reconsider those tools? Just a thought. 🙂
