When Kayesha died, my shrink kept telling me to write about it, but write what? I needed a story. Without a story compelling the characters forward, I don’t hear their voices, and I can’t see the scenes. It took a year and a half, but I finally saw the story: Two musically gifted orphans, and extrovert from Houston,Texas (Kay), and an invisible introvert from the east coast (me). She brings him out, and starts a clumsy romance. Of coures it ends baddly as she dies in the end leaving William alone again. It was after all about my therapy, and therapy is for facing truths not running from them. We can’t live in our work. My shrink was right too. It was very cathartic for me, I cried a lot and felt much better after I’d finished. Then the big problem was a title. But I found it, ASLEEP THE SNOW CAME FLYING.

Story first, then stick to it, don’t get distracted.

As they say in set design class. Put everything that fits into your set design, then, take everything you don’t need out.

Other gurus recommend that you never do this — it limits your options. What is your opinion?
