Not a bad guideline for life in general, much more dynamic than just being honest in a religious sense. For a writer, it’s called, “being true to your voice,” delightfully hard to do because it’s the key ingredient in developing “every” character in whatever genre you’re using. When your characters “ring true,” be they lovely creatures or despicable ones, it’s because they’re expressing themselves in the way you would, if you were that character. Great productive fun if you don’t go nuts in the process, not only the path to good writing, but an excellent way of getting to know yourself better as well.

I think you made an indication that you don’t have to wait to write a different genre, but that you can diverse yourself by incorporating your genre skills and elements in one script at various segments of the story like for instance, in a drama, you get to a comical scene and you really lay it out as touching the characters, dialogue, actions, etc. The same can be done for a brief Action sequence for no less than a couple pages. It shows various genres in one script. I believe this is my take away from your post. Thanks! Your’re always priceless.

You make a great point, David. I, too, firmly believe in telling any story that is pushing to get out.

If you authentically have multiple non-cousin genres you want to write in, you can market them separately. Many famous novelists use pen names to write in different genres.

But yes, for creativity and self-expression, I highly support getting the stories OUT!

Thanks for the “Stick to the Same Genre” advice. While I also believe this to be important, it certainly pays to be working partially on all those other oh so wonderful scripts they are trying to get out of our subconscious. After all, we don’t want to expire without having fulfilled ourselves to the max by saying as much as we have to say…

I need help tightening up my screenplay and this article was good encouragement to me in eliminating weaker moments. That’s a good guideline to use! Thank you!
