script-marketing-query-genie

You’ve poured countless hours into your script—whether it was late nights fueled by endless cups of coffee or stolen moments in the early mornings before heading to work—and now you’re here.

You did whatever it took to get those pages done, and it’s nothing short of a miracle—it’s something to be genuinely proud of—congratulations!

But here’s the thingnow comes the real challenge: Selling your script.

If you’ve ever struggled to distill your 100-page masterpiece into a single captivating logline, craft the perfect query letter, or get an agent or producer to read it, you know exactly what I mean when I say the hard work isn’t over yet

But here’s the good news: You don’t have to do it alone.

Marketing is NEVER easy — But It’s Essential!

If you want your script to sell, you’ve got to do something about it.

What You Need To Market Your Script

To sell your script, you need three things that are non-negotiable:

  • A compelling query letter
  • A targeted list of producers who fit your script
  • A clear plan for outreach and follow-up

Let’s break down why each one matters.

A Compelling Query Letter Pitch

A great query letter delivers your story in a few irresistible sentences. It’s polished, imaginative, and intriguing enough to make a producer say, “I need to read this script!”

Writing a stellar script is one thing, but distilling it into a concise, captivating pitch? That’s a whole different skill—and it’s absolutely crucial to your success.

A List of Producers Targeted For Your Script Genre

No matter how great your script is, pitching it to the wrong people is a waste of time—and worse, it can hurt your chances.

You need to target producers who:

  • Have worked on projects similar to yours.
  • Are in the right “sweet spot” of the Hollywood hierarchy—not too big, not too small, but just right.

Smart Girls ensures your list is packed with producers looking for a script like yours, avoiding companies that won’t accept unsolicited material or that could land you on a blacklist.

A Solid Plan For Following Up

Sending one email isn’t enough. In Hollywood—and any competitive, sales-driven industry—it takes persistence to get the attention of the people who can move your project up the food chain.

Follow-up is critical to connecting with those people. Smart Girls makes your follow-up easy with customized email templates that guide you every step of the way for the various situations you find yourself in, including knowing when to follow-up, what to say, and how to say it.

Launch Your Campaign

Once you receive the materials, you will follow the instructions to reach out to Hollywood with confidence as you find your Hollywood Champion!

You’re just One Step Away from the First Step toward selling your script. Once you start reaching out and pitching your script to producers, you literally open up the possibility for your success to happen!

We can’t guarantee you will sell your script because no one can… so our strategy for you is to get as many things working in your favor as possible to improve your odds.

You must have a well-written script before you start marketing it, so if you’re here, we assume you do. Then you need to put as many points on the scoreboard in your favor as possible. You score points, so to speak, with a great email query that visualizes your story, suggests where fits in the market, and mentions any qualifications you might have. Then you have to target the right people for your script, and you must follow up and do your best to build an email relationship with the prospective producer. In the end, this step is bout finding that one person who can become a Hollywood Champion for your script. How do you do it?  You have to go step-by-step, starting with the four steps listed above.

Are you ready to give your script the chance it deserves? Then it’s time to take that Next Step:

Why Smart Girls Productions?

With over 10,000 clients and more than two decades of experience, Smart Girls has helped writers achieve their dreams—getting scripts read, optioned, produced, and building career connections with Hollywood producers. We know who’s who in Hollywood, and we know how to connect you with the right people right now.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Smart Girls no longer provides printed letters, as email is a free, efficient, and effective way to communicate. It also makes it easy to follow up and track responses, ensuring your outreach is seamless and professional.

Getting representation is often a challenging topic for writers. The truth is, having good representation—someone with clout who genuinely believes in you and your projects—is ideal. However, as a new writer without feature film credits or substantial TV series credits, it can be difficult to catch the attention of agents or managers. That’s why we’ve found it’s often more effective to connect with producers at the right level first.

No, we do not send the emails out for you as part of our standard service. Instead, we provide you with a spreadsheet and PDF containing the email addresses of production companies, so you can email them directly on your own. However, we do offer an optional add-on service where we can handle the First Contact for you for an additional $200. Many writers find this helpful because it takes care of the initial outreach quickly, allowing you to focus solely on follow-ups.

It’s very rare to sell a screenplay outright. Instead, if you’re fortunate enough to land a deal, it’s more likely to be an option, typically earning you about 10% of the sale price. The sale price itself can vary widely, depending on factors like the script’s potential and the buyer. For example, an outright sale might range from $40,000—what New Line Cinema used to pay—to $125,000 or even $250,000 for a high-potential “spec” screenplay from a new writer.

Hollywood executives are accountable for the movies they greenlight, which is why many play it safe. Instead of taking risks, they justify failures by blaming sequels, stars, or directors. While a few aim to create meaningful, profitable films, most focus on making money—Hollywood’s ultimate bottom line—and the odds of doing so.

If it’s not in your budget, don’t do it. But marketing is a crucial step—why spend all that time writing if you’re not going to try to get it out there? If you have the money, then you have to ask yourself why you wouldn’t invest a few hundred dollars to give your script a chance when you're asking a producer to invest tens of millions to make it.

We strive to keep our database as accurate as possible with ongoing updates and meticulous research. For each of the 60 companies you pay for, we focus on selecting the best person at the company with an email available. Whenever possible, we aim to provide multiple email options for each contact, such as a direct individual email, a company email, or even a wildcard third option. While we can’t guarantee every person will have an individual email, we go above and beyond to maximize your chances of reaching the right people. Plus, we include a few bonus companies to account for any emails that may change or go bad over time before we have a chance to update it.

The entertainment industry is competitive, but silence doesn’t mean your script isn’t valuable—it’s often about timing or the company’s activities in that moment. Following up 7–10 days later with a polite reminder can make all the difference. Our follow-up email templates, included in the Query Letter Package or Script Marketing Campaign, guide you through the  follow-up process. They’re also available for purchase separately.

If we’re writing a query letter for your project, we’ll deliver the letter within one week after you complete the script information form. Once the query letter is finalized, we’ll prepare your list, which may take an additional week depending on the status of that Genre List. If you’re purchasing the Genre Producer List on its own, delivery depends on whether the list for that genre has been updated for the current quarter. If it’s ready, you’ll receive it within 24 hours; otherwise, it may take up to 7 days.

No project is easier to get made because they are all hard. Keeping that in mind, platforms like Netflix and Amazon are popular because they support movies, limited series, and ongoing series. If your story works as a limited series, it could mean more opportunities, but focus on what best serves your project. If it’s complete as a standalone, keep it that way.

No, you don’t have to know someone to start. The Script Marketing Campaign with Smart Girls is designed to help you build contacts. Most of our clients don’t have Hollywood connections initially, so we guide you in “getting to know” the right people. If you do have contacts, we can advise you on the best way to reach out to them.

My clients have experienced it all—from getting their movie made or securing an option to being hired to write scripts for companies, and even signing a million-dollar deal that ultimately fell through. Anything can happen and what happens for someone else has no bearing on you. You need to decide if this makes sense for you. Every script is unique as is the current industry climate at any moment. The key question is: Does it make sense to you to craft a strong query letter and target the right companies to give your script a chance? If the answer is yes, let’s get to work!

Worrying about your idea being stolen is valid, but you have to protect yourself the best you can and then let it go. Start by registering your project with the WGA and filing for copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office. These steps provide an initial layer of protection if someone tries to steal your work. If you believe your work has been stolen, you’ll need to consult an attorney.

We don’t require a contract since our services are clearly outlined online. While we can’t guarantee specific outcomes—producers’ opinions are beyond our control—we are happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement to confirm that we won’t share your idea with anyone. We are not producers and will not produce your idea.

Many companies do not accept unsolicited pitches, which is why Smart Girls tracks over 3,000 companies and excludes those with strict no-pitch policies, and we are always updating our information on this. To get around this, we focus on smaller hungry producers who are actively making movies and tend to be more open to pitches. They would then help get your work noticed by bigger players should they want to take your project on.

We’ve developed curated lists for each genre we offer, carefully selecting companies that are active, reputable, and likely open to new submissions. Our selections are informed by the types of projects they’ve produced in the past, their potential interest in closely-related genres, current industry insights into what they may be seeking, and their openness to new writers.

While we work hard to provide accurate and up-to-date email addresses, occasional bounces can happen due to changes at the company. To account for this, we include a few extra companies on your list to offset any issues. If you encounter bounced emails, let us know, and we’ll look that company and individual up to see if we can find more current information.
